A.W.A.R.E. (Alzheimer’s Wandering & Rescue Education) is a training program for first responders (such as police, emergency management personnel, fire fighters, etc.) and other interested persons (such as family and professional caregivers) who are interested in learning the latest techniques to search and rescue someone with memory loss who are wandered away from their place of residence. Our staff receive specialized training based on a curriculum recommended by the Governor’s Alzheimer’s Disease & Related Disorders Advisory Council. The training which is done for all new employees and on an-ongoing basis includes topics such as:

An Overview of Dementia (including Alzheimer's disease, its symptoms and progression)

Communicating and Relating to a Person with Dementia (proper approaches, etc.)

Challenging Behaviors (causes, behavioral symptoms, problem-solving and prevention)

Philosophy of Person-Centered Care (understanding individual's personality as it relates to personal care)

Activities of Daily Living (evaluating level of personal care assistance, appropriate techniques and approaches)

Stress Reduction (techniques for reducing stress while providing care, crisis management)

Activities (proper planning and how to incorporate activities into every aspect of patient care)

From the beginning, the overall design of Wellington Parc was considered to be key to the success of providing specialized care to people with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. At the time, some of the most innovative programs were developed and incorporated into the environment. To this day, Wellington Parc works to improve the environment for those who have memory loss to decrease risk of injury while encouraging freedom of movement.
